There are several different oral treatments your dermatologist may prescribe. Oral treatments range from oral antibiotics, oral retinoid, and oral contraceptives. There are several contraceptives (birth control) on the market that can prevent acne. Oral antibiotics consist of antibiotics such as Oral erythromycin, minocycline, and Doxycycline. Other oral treatments such as oral retinoid include Accutane. However, the brand name Accutane has been banned. Dermatologist can still prescribe the generic form of Accutane.
Many of these oral treatments have severe side effects. Side effects range from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sensitivity to light, allergic reactions, vaginal yeast infections, depression, thoughts of suicide, and birth defects. Therefore, one needs to be careful and consider oral treatments carefully. One really need to be careful of oral acne treatments if one is pregnant. Pregnant women should avoid any type of oral acne treatments because of what theses medications can do to the unborn child. If the idea of taking oral medications make you nervous because of the severe side effects, you do have the option of laser treatments. The laser light kills the bacteria on the skin. The laser light is also excellent for removing acne scars. Dermabrasion and chemical abrasion are also good acne treatments to consider if one does not want to consider oral treatments for severe cases of acne
